Choose a Grid Size
Grid size describes the puzzle itself. It is not the number of puzzles printed on one page.
Use the numbers 1 to 4 in four 2x2 boxes. This is the simplest starting point.
Use the numbers 1 to 6 in six boxes, each 2 rows high and 3 cells wide.
Move to the classic grid when 6x6 Next Step puzzles can be solved comfortably.
4x4 Starter
Starter puzzles begin with five or six numbers and offer several immediate moves. They can be completed in one or two short rounds of simple row, column, and box checks.
4x4 Next Step
Next Step puzzles begin with four numbers and need a longer chain of simple deductions. The rules stay the same, but fewer cells are certain at the beginning.
How to Play 4x4 Sudoku
Fill the grid with 1, 2, 3, and 4. Each number appears once in every row, every column, and every 2x2 box. There is no arithmetic. The numbers work like symbols. A useful first move is to find a row, column, or box that already contains three numbers and identify the one that is missing.
6x6 Starter
When 4x4 feels easy, move to 6x6. Starter puzzles still provide plenty of clues while introducing six numbers and larger boxes.
6x6 Next Step
These puzzles have fewer starting numbers and require more scanning. They are the final small-grid step before easy 9x9 Sudoku.
How to Play 6x6 Sudoku
Fill the grid with the numbers 1 to 6. Each number appears once in every row, every column, and every 2x3 box. Thick lines show where each box begins and ends.
